Wrongolians conquer Mongol Rally

Looking to kick off 2018 with a fundraising initiative for our life-saving charity?

There are so many ways you can raise vital funds for our charity this year - read how four friends raised over £2,000, conquering more than 10,000 miles in a Renault Clio in the process!

Last July, Dom Bowcock, Tom Finnie, Benji Singh and Ope Paul-Lawal embarked upon the Mongol Rally, said to be the greatest motoring adventure in the world! All participating teams are required to raise funds for their chosen charity ‘Cool Earth’, but the team decided to also raise funds for the Kent Surrey Sussex Air Ambulance as their own charity, for which we are hugely grateful.

The epic Mongol Rally requires the brave entrants to battle 10,000 miles of mountains, desert and grassland of Europe and Asia relying on their wits, initiative and a bit of good fortune, with no support or even a route map given to teams! Starting at Goodwood Motor Circuit in West Sussex, teams travel across France, Belgium, Germany, Czech Republic, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia and eventually finish just over the border in the Siberian ex-soviet city of Ulan-Ude. If this wasn't difficult enough, all 200 teams are required to use a 'small' vehicle with no more than a one litre engine to find their own improvised route across the world to Mongolia!

Almost unbelievably, after many trials, tribulations and disasters along the way, the team succesfully completed the rally with plenty of stories to tell and the car (and team members) still entirely intact! Even more amazingly, thanks to some fantastic support the team raised more than £2,000 for the life-saving work undertaken every single day across Kent, Surrey and Sussex by our charity.

Back in December, Dom drove the infamous, customised Renaul Clio complete with Mongolian sand to our Redhill air base to meet with our crew and share a few of his tales from the open road! Massive congratulations and thanks to Dom, Tom, Benji and Ope for completing this incredible, and quite frankly insane challenge and for raising such a wonderful amount of money for our charity.
